Summer days down on the avenues
a gang of friends, there was me and you
There was Tommy and Marilyn and all the rest
Howling with laughter at each simple jest
Sit on the stairs that twist up to the flats
Jostle each other to let neighbours pass
Down to the park to play ball or shoot hoops
Whatever the score it’s the teams that we choose

Or maybe then take a dash to the lane
Where the thrill of the chase the name of the game
Hide in a shed with the moment’s best friend

As heroes we stood as we traded our dreams
The magic was broken by my mother’s shout
dinner is ready but we drag to stay out

But who’s foolin’ who, it’s not even a guess
I stare in your eyes pull you tight to my chest

All that we had was the time on our hands
Late summer launched the craziest plans
climb to the roof to avoid all the heat

City Hall clock with its beckoning light
Would draw us like moths, the feeling’s all right
Choices were weighed on the monument’s steps
blow it all off, crash the dance at the Rec
